Lesson 1 - beginning felting
Lesson 1 - Types of Felting and a focus on 3d felting.
Felting
There are 2 main types of felting - wet felting and needle felting. (there are also combinations and variations of these, but let's stick with these right now!)
Needle Felting:
Needle felting is the artistic and creative process of using a sharp, barbed needle to create sculptures and pictures. There are 2 main types of needle felting - 3d and 2d. 3d - 3 dimensional - is using wool to create sculptures, 2d is 2 dimensional and is used for wool paintings and pictures.
3D felting:
To create a wool sculpture, you will need the following:
A felting mat
Felting needles
Core fibre or core wool
A design or an idea of what you want to make!
Once you have an idea of your creation, you can begin gathering the other supplies you need!
Let's take for example a felted fairy.
To create a needle felted fairy, you will need:
- Core wool for their body and head
- Carded wool, or carded batts for their bodies/wings
- Curly wool for their hair.
